RECOMMENDATIONS REGARDING CORRECT ADMINISTRATION:

The product must be administered with food. The tablet can be mixed with a small amount of food and given before the main meal or in food. The tablets are flavored.

SPECIAL WARNINGS:

Special precautions for use in animals.

Before initiating treatment with spironolactone and benazepril HCL, an assessment of kidney function and serum potassium levels must be made, especially in elderly dogs that may suffer from hypoadrenocorticism, hyperkalemia or hyponatremia. Unlike humans, in dogs no increase in the incidence of hyperkalemia was observed in the case of clinical tests performed with this combination. However, regular monitoring of renal function and serum potassium level is recommended in the case of dogs with kidney disease, as they present an increased risk of hyperkalemia during treatment with this product.

Spironolactone has an antiandrogenic effect and therefore it is not recommended to administer the product to growing dogs.

Since spironolactone undergoes biotransformation at the liver level, the product must be carefully administered to dogs with liver dysfunctions.

OVERDOSE:

After administration of a dose 10 times higher than the recommended dosage (20 mg./kg.gvspironolactone and 2.5 mg./kg.gvbenazepril HCL) dose-dependent adverse effects were reported in healthy dogs. Daily administration to healthy dogs of an overdose, e.g. 6 times higher (12 mg./kg. live weight spironolactone and 1.5 mg./kg. live weight benazepril HCL) and 10 times higher (20 mg./kg gvspironolactone and 2.5 mg./kg .gv benazepril HCL) than the therapeutic dose led to a reduction in red cell mass. However, this decrease is transient, the mass of red cells remaining in normal values, the finding was not considered important from a clinical point of view. A moderate compensatory physiological hypertrophy of the glomerular zone of the adrenal glands was found, dose-dependent change. This hypertrophy does not seem to have pathological implications because it is reversible once the treatment is stopped. In case of accidental ingestion by the dog of a large number of Cardalis tablets, there is no specific antidote or treatment, it is recommended to induce vomiting, wash the stomach (after risk assessment) and monitor electrolytes. Symptomatic treatment, rehydration must be carried out.
